He Gives to His Mother but Not to His Father

Question :
I work in the army and receive a fairly decent salary, a portion of which I give to my mother, to honor her for what she used to spend on me in the past. I don't give to my father, though, because he never spent anything on me, even when I was young. Am I sinning by doing this?

Answer :
Being dutiful to one's parents is one of the most important obligatory acts, even if they didn't spend on you when you were small since Allah Almighty said,
And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents.
"And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents."
Al-Isra' 17:23.
And He said:
Give thanks to Me and to your parents, - unto Me is the final destination.
"Give thanks to Me and to your parents, - unto Me is the final destination."
Luqman 31: 14.
You must be dutiful and kind to your father in both speech and action. If he is needy, then it is incumbent upon you to support him from your salary, in such a way that you do not cause harm to yourself or your own family, since the Prophet Peace Be Upon Him said:
There is to be no harm (received) nor harming.
"There is to be no harm (received) nor harming."
Ibn Majah no. 2340, 2341.
If you have a surplus of money, he can ask you according to his needs because the Prophet Peace Be Upon Him said,
The purest thing that you eat is what you derive from your earnings, and your children are from your earnings.
"The purest thing that you eat is what you derive from your earnings, and your children are from your earnings."
Abu Dawud no. 3528 and At-Tirmithi no. 1358.
Therefore, we advise you to be good to both your father and your mother, and to strive to be dutiful and kind to them and to be diligent in pleasing them due to the saying of the Prophet Peace Be Upon Him:
Allah's pleasure is in the parents' pleasure; His anger is in their anger.
"Allah's pleasure is in the parents' pleasure; His anger is in their anger."
At-Tirmithi no. 1899.
And may Allah guide us all to the truth.
Ibn Baz
